FAQ

Short answers to common questions about Roleline.

Can I lock myself out?

No. Roleline refuses to take away your own roleline_manage_roles, promote_users, edit_users or list_users, whether you edit a role, delete one, restore a backup, import roles or change your own roles, and it never deletes the Administrator role. It also refuses to take away your own manage_options, and, for people who manage roles but aren't administrators, any capability they have, since they couldn't give it back. If someone else locks administrators out, see Backups and restore.

How do I undo a change?

Users → Roles → Backups → Restore on the backup from before it. Restoring is backed up too.

Does Roleline slow my site down?

No. On the site itself Roleline does nothing: roles are WordPress's, and WordPress reads them as always. Roleline's screens only load in the admin.

Is it compatible with User Role Editor or Members?

They edit the same WordPress roles, so switching is easy: install Roleline, check your roles under Users → Roles, then remove the other plugin. Roles you made there stay. Members' content permissions and User Role Editor's other add-ons are separate; Roleline Pro covers content access, block and menu visibility, and login redirects.

What happens to users when I delete a role?

Users with other roles just lose it. Users who had only that role get the role you choose.

Can a user have no role?

Yes, as in WordPress ("No role for this site"): they can log in but do nothing. Untick all of a user's roles to do that.

Who can manage roles?

Anyone with roleline_manage_roles. Administrators have it; give it to another role from the role editor (Roleline group) to delegate. Non-administrators can only grant capabilities they have.

Does it work without WooCommerce?

Yes, on any WordPress site. With WooCommerce, its capabilities and roles are recognised and grouped.

What happens if I deactivate Roleline Pro?

Roleline Pro's rules aren't applied while it's inactive: content, blocks and menu items you restricted are visible to everyone, login redirects stop and temporary roles don't end. Roleline doesn't include Roleline Pro's code, so it can't apply them, but it doesn't hide the fact either: Users → Roles lists what's affected, with links, and offers to remove temporary roles whose date has passed; the Dashboard and Plugins screens show a warning until you dismiss it. Activate Roleline Pro again and everything applies again.

What happens to my data if I delete Roleline?

Your roles stay: they're WordPress's. On Deactivate, Roleline asks whether its own data (the backups, the custom capabilities list and its roleline_manage_roles capability) should be kept, the default, or removed when you delete it.
