FAQ
Short answers to common questions about Fileline.
Does Fileline need WooCommerce?
No. It works on any WordPress site, with or without WooCommerce. (For selling files in a WooCommerce store, use WooCommerce's own downloadable products; Fileline is for files you give away or share.)
Are there limits on downloads, files or versions?
No. Add as many as you need.
How big can files be?
As big as your site can upload: the limit is your host's upload size (shown in the Media Library's uploader). Sending isn't limited: files are sent in chunks and downloads can resume. For files bigger than your upload limit, upload them another way (SFTP into the uploads folder, then add them to the Media Library with a plugin, or store them on a CDN) and use the file's address in the version.
Can I see who downloaded a file?
Fileline counts downloads but doesn't record who downloaded them: no personal data is kept. Fileline Pro's email gate collects the addresses of people who download gated files, with their consent.
Do download links change when I upload a new version?
No. The download's link always serves the latest version. Each version also has its own link.
Can I move my downloads from another download plugin?
Fileline Pro can import downloads from a CSV file, which most download plugins can export or which you can make from a spreadsheet. With Fileline alone, add them one by one: pick the existing files from the Media Library in the Versions box.
Does it work with page caching?
Yes. Download links are never cached as pages, and the button and lists don't depend on the visitor (members-only buttons show a login note, which is the same for every visitor who isn't logged in).
Is it translatable?
Yes. Translate it on translate.wordpress.org, or with Poedit or Loco Translate using languages/fileline.pot.
What happens to my data if I delete Fileline?
On Deactivate, Fileline asks what should happen to its data if you then delete it. Keep it (the default) and everything is there if you install Fileline again. Choose Delete it permanently to remove the downloads, versions, counts, categories, tags and settings when the plugin is deleted. Your files stay in the Media Library (and the protected folder keeps protecting them) unless you also tick Also delete the files uploaded to the protected folder.
