What can't be returned

Keep digital products, whole categories or single products out of returns, and how returnable quantities are worked out.

Customers only see the items they can actually return. Everything else in the order is left off the request form.

Digital products

Virtual and downloadable products can't be returned is on by default. Turn it off if you sell virtual products that can be returned, such as event tickets you refund.

Whole categories

Under What can't be returned → Categories on WooCommerce → Settings → Returns, choose categories whose products are never returnable, for example underwear, earrings or made-to-measure items. For a variable product, the parent product's categories count.

Single products

Edit the product, open the Advanced tab in Product data and tick Not returnable. It applies to all the product's variations.

How many can be returned

For each order item, the returnable quantity is:

bought − already refunded − in other open returns

A completed return counts once, through its refund on the order. So a customer who bought three shirts and returns one can still return the other two later, but can't send the same shirt back twice. A declined or cancelled return frees its items again.

Customers return whole items: the quantity is a whole number.

When nothing in an order can be returned any more, the order stops offering a Return button.

Staff can make exceptions

The window, the order status and the "returns switched on" setting only apply to customers. When you create a return yourself (see Orders and returns by phone), you can return any item that's still returnable, even after the window has closed.
