FAQ

Short answers to common questions about Giftline.

Does Giftline slow my site down?

No. On the storefront it adds a small stylesheet on product, cart, checkout and account pages, the gift card field at checkout and, on the classic checkout, a small script. Balances are looked up only when a customer applies a code or has store credit. The staff screens, reports and exports load only in the admin, and the daily job for expiry and reminders runs once a day in the background.

Is a gift card a coupon or a discount?

Neither. A gift card or store credit is a way to pay: it's taken off after tax and shipping, so tax is charged on the full price of what's bought. Coupons keep working alongside it, but never on a gift card product.

Can a card be spent over several orders?

Yes. Each order takes what it needs, and the rest stays on the card for next time. Customers can see what's left in the balance check or in My Account.

Do gift cards expire?

Not unless you set them to, under WooCommerce → Giftline → Gift cards expire after. In many places the law limits or forbids expiry on gift cards, so check before you do. Store credit never expires. See Expiry and reminders.

Can customers combine several gift cards and store credit?

Yes: up to five gift cards on one order, then store credit for what's left.

Can the buyer see the balance of a card they gave someone?

No. Once a card bought for someone else has been emailed to them, it's theirs: in My Account the buyer sees only the end of its code and when and where it was sent, not the balance or the printable card. Until it's sent, for example while it waits for its delivery date, the buyer sees it in full so they can spot a mistake. Cards bought to print and give by hand stay with the buyer. See Gift cards and credit in My Account.

Can I sell gift cards in other currencies?

Cards and credit are in your store's currency. A card made while the store used another currency can't be spent.

Can I sell printed cards in my shop or at a market?

Yes. Make a batch under WooCommerce → Gift cards → Add gift card or credit, tick This card is printed and handed over, not emailed, and print them eight to a sheet. See Printed gift cards.

How do I move my cards from another gift card plugin?

Export them from the other plugin to a CSV file and import it under WooCommerce → Gift cards → Import and export, with each card's code so it keeps working. See Liability report, import and export.

What happens while Giftline is deactivated?

Balances and their history are kept, but nothing can use them: the gift card field and store credit disappear from the checkout, and Gift cards & credit from My Account. Gift card products can't be bought, and gift card emails waiting for their delivery date wait too. Orders already paid with a gift card or store credit keep their totals.

When you activate Giftline again, gift card products are back on sale, and waiting gift card emails are sent: those whose day passed meanwhile go out straight away.

What happens when my license expires?

Giftline keeps working: every feature stays. Only updates stop until you renew (see Licenses and updates).

What happens to my data if I delete Giftline?

On Deactivate, Giftline asks whether its data should be kept, the default, or removed when you delete it. Removing it deletes every gift card and store credit balance with its history, the settings and the scheduled gift card emails, and frees the license activation. Gift card products and orders stay, and the products can't be bought without Giftline.

Warning

Only choose to delete the data once nobody can spend their gift cards or store credit any more: the balances can't be brought back.
