Using Pruneline

Patterns and parts

See where each synced pattern, template part and navigation menu is used, and trash the ones with no reference.

The block editor's reusable pieces pile up: synced patterns made once for a sale, template parts from an old design, navigation menus nobody picks any more. The Patterns & parts tab of Tools → Pruneline lists them with where each one is used.

Patterns & parts: synced patterns, template parts and navigation menus, and where each one is used.

What is listed

Kind What it is
Synced pattern A pattern you saved as synced, in Appearance → Editor → Patterns or the block editor.
Template part (theme) A header, footer or other part that comes with your block theme.
Template part (made in the site editor) A part you or a plugin made in the site editor.
Navigation menu A menu used by the Navigation block.

Template parts are listed only with a block theme. Classic menus from Appearance → Menus aren't part of this list.

A piece counts as used when it is placed in content, in another pattern, in a template or template part, in a block widget, or in your theme's own template files.

The columns

Column What it shows
Name Its title. Click it to edit it.
Kind One of the kinds above.
Status Published, Draft and so on.
Used Used, No reference found, or for a menu, Shown by navigation blocks with no menu chosen.
Places How many places use it. Where used lists them.

A Navigation block with no menu chosen shows your newest published menu. When your site has such blocks, that menu is marked Shown by navigation blocks with no menu chosen, and it counts as used.

Move unused pieces to the Trash

  1. Open Patterns & parts and click No reference found.
  2. Tick the ones you don't need.
  3. Choose Move to Trash under Bulk actions, then Apply.

You can restore them from the Trash. Template parts that come from your theme's files have no checkbox: they're part of the theme and can't be trashed.

Note

Like templates, "No reference found" only means nothing Pruneline scanned uses it. A theme or plugin can still insert a pattern from its code. Check before you trash it.
