Troubleshooting

What to check when a field doesn't show at checkout, an answer is missing from an order, or a label didn't change.

A field doesn't show at checkout

Work through these in order:

  1. Is it enabled? On WooCommerce → Checkout Fields, its Enabled box must be ticked, and saved.
  2. Is it in the section you're looking at? Address fields are in the address forms: in the Checkout block, a saved address shows as a card, and the field is in the form behind Edit. Order fields are near the order notes, which some themes move or hide.
  3. Does the list say "Not shown at checkout"? See the next section.
  4. Clear your cache. Checkout pages are usually excluded from caching, but some hosts and plugins cache them anyway. Clear the cache and check in a private browser window.
  5. Is it your checkout page? If you have more than one checkout page, check the one set under WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Checkout page.

"Not shown at checkout" in the list

A field says this when it was set up with an add-on, such as Fieldline Pro, that isn't active now:

  • "the plugin that provides this type is inactive": the field is a radio button, date, number, email or phone field (or another add-on's type).
  • "the plugin that checks when it shows is inactive": the field only shows under conditions, such as for local pickup.

Fieldline keeps the field with all its settings, and customers' answers stay on their orders, but leaves it out of checkout rather than asking every customer for it in a shape it wasn't made for, or when it doesn't apply. Activate the add-on again and the field is back. If you don't need it any more, delete it.

An answer is missing from an order

  • The field was added or switched on after the order. Older orders have no answer.
  • The field is optional and the customer left it empty. Empty answers aren't listed, and neither is an unticked checkbox.
  • The field was deleted. The answer is still in the database, but without the field Fieldline doesn't know its label, so it isn't listed. Add a field with the same key to show it again.
  • The order was placed by another plugin's checkout, such as an express payment button that skips the checkout page. Those orders never see the checkout fields.

A label for WooCommerce's fields didn't change

  • Check you clicked Save changes at the bottom of the screen.
  • Some themes and plugins change address labels too. If yours runs after Fieldline, its label wins. Try with a default theme to find out.
  • The email address and the country can't be renamed; WooCommerce doesn't allow it.

The classic checkout looks different from the Checkout block

That's expected for a few things, because the Checkout block has fewer kinds of fields: a text area is a one-line text box there, and text placeholders aren't shown. See Field types.

Still stuck?

Temporarily switch to a default theme such as Twenty Twenty-Five, with only WooCommerce and Fieldline active. If the field works there, the difference is in your theme or another plugin. Ask in the Fieldline support forum on WordPress.org, with what you see, which checkout you use, and the field's settings. Fieldline Pro customers can also contact us through extendiment.com.
