A Media Library with a few hundred files is hard to find your way around. Folderline adds a folder tree beside it, in WordPress's own look: make folders and subfolders, drag files into them, and click a folder to see just its files. As many folders as you like, nested as deep as you like. No limits on folders.
A folder tree beside your files
- Works in both views of Media → Library: the grid and the list.
- "All files", "Unsorted" (files in no folder yet) and your folders, each with how many files it holds.
- Create, rename and delete folders and subfolders right in the tree, or from a folder's menu (right-click, or the "…" button).
- Drag folders to put them in a different order or inside another folder.
- Search your folders by name, and collapse or expand any branch. The tree remembers what you collapsed and which folder you had open.
- Resize the panel by dragging its edge, or hide it. On phones and small screens it folds into a "Folders" button.
- Fully usable from the keyboard: arrow keys to move through the tree, Enter to open a folder, F2 to rename, Delete to delete, Shift+F10 for the folder menu. Screen readers hear a proper tree.
Moving files
- Drag a file onto a folder, in the grid or in the list. In the grid's "Bulk select" mode, or with list checkboxes, drag one of the selected files and they all go together.
- "Move to folder" in the list view's bulk actions.
- A Folder field in every file's details, in the Media Library, media pickers and on the Edit Media screen.
- Drop files on "Unsorted" to take them out of their folder. A file is in one folder at a time.
Finding files
- Click a folder to see its files, optionally including its subfolders' files.
- Uploads made while a folder is open go straight into that folder, on Media → Library and in media pickers. Media → Add New has a folder picker too.
In every media picker
The "Add Media" window, featured images and the block editor's image, gallery, cover and media pickers get a folder filter next to WordPress's own filters, with your folders indented as in the tree. Files uploaded there go into the chosen folder.
Safe by design
- Deleting a folder never deletes files: they move to Unsorted. A folder with subfolders asks whether to delete them too or keep them.
- Folders are stored the WordPress way (a private taxonomy), with counts that stay fast with thousands of files and hundreds of folders.
- For anyone who can upload files (authors, editors and administrators). People can only move files they're allowed to edit.
Settings
Under Media → Folder Settings: show or hide file counts, include subfolders' files when a folder is opened, and pick a default folder for uploads that don't come from inside a folder.
For developers
Filters and actions for every step: which post types get folders, the taxonomy's arguments, the tree's data and each folder's data, folder permissions, the media query, the upload folder, REST routes in folderline/v1, and JavaScript hooks for the tree's menu and rows. folderline_loaded fires once Folderline has loaded, for add-ons.
Folderline Pro
The separate Folderline Pro add-on brings the same folders to posts, pages and custom post types (WooCommerce products included), plus folder colours, per-user folders, downloading a folder as a ZIP, sorting files within a folder, and importing folders from FileBird, Real Media Library, Enhanced Media Library and WP Media Folder. Everything described above is in this plugin and works without it. See extendiment.com/plugins/folderline.
