# Tax exemption - Wholesaleline 1.x documentation

> Exempt a group or a single customer from tax, and show a group its prices with or without tax.

Resellers often buy without paying tax. Wholesaleline can exempt a whole group or one customer, in the classic and block cart and checkout alike.

## Exempt a group

1. Go to **WooCommerce → Wholesale** and edit the group.
2. Under **Payment terms and tax**, tick **Customers in this group are exempt from tax**.
3. Click **Save group**.

## Exempt one customer, or make one pay tax

On the customer's profile, under **Wholesale**, set **Tax**:

| Choice | Meaning |
|---|---|
| **As their group** | The group's setting (no group: pays tax). |
| **Exempt from tax** | This customer pays no tax, whatever their group. |
| **Pays tax** | This customer pays tax, even in an exempt group. |

## What happens

When an exempt customer is logged in, their cart and checkout have no tax, and their orders are placed without tax, as WooCommerce does for any tax-exempt customer. If another plugin adds the tax back after the cart was priced, the order gets a note: "This customer is set as tax exempt, but the order was placed with tax."

Orders you add under **WooCommerce → Orders → Add order** follow the customer too: choose an exempt customer, add the items and click **Recalculate**, and the order has no tax. Orders placed at the checkout keep the tax they were placed with when you recalculate them.

Tax exemption only matters when **Enable tax rates and calculations** is on under **WooCommerce → Settings → General**.

> Keep a copy of each exempt customer's tax or resale certificate. Asking for their **Tax or VAT number** in [Wholesale applications](applications) records it with their application.

## Prices with or without tax

To show a group its prices without tax while retail customers see them with tax (or the other way round), edit the group and set **Show prices** to **Excluding tax** or **Including tax**. **As the store does** follows **WooCommerce → Settings → Tax**.
