# Prices - Optionline 1.x documentation

> How option prices are added to the product's price in the cart, with quantities, variations and taxes, and what the live total shows.

## How a price is added

An option's price is added to the product's price for **each item** in the cart line.

> A $28 mug with a $6 engraving and a $5 gift box costs $39. Two of them cost $78.

- A text or text area field adds its price when it's filled in.
- A dropdown or radio buttons field adds the chosen choice's price.
- Checkboxes add the price of every ticked choice.
- Empty prices are free. You can also enter `0`.
- A negative price takes money off, e.g. "No gift wrap (−$1.00)". A product's price never goes below zero.

For a **variable product**, the options' prices are added to the price of the variation the customer chose.

## The live total

When any option on a product costs something, the product page shows two lines under the options:

- **Options total**: what the chosen options add, times the quantity.
- **Total**: the product's price plus the options, times the quantity.

They follow every change: typing in a text field, ticking a box, changing the quantity, or choosing another variation. For a variable product the total shows "–" until a variation is chosen. The amounts use your store's currency format.

> [!NOTE]
> The live total is what the customer sees while choosing. The store works the price out again on the server when the product is added to the cart, from the options as you set them up.

## Taxes

Enter option prices the same way as your product prices: including or excluding tax, as set in **WooCommerce → Settings → Tax → Prices entered with tax**. On the product page and in the cart they're shown the way your store displays prices (including or excluding tax), and taxed with the product's tax class.

## Coupons and sale prices

The options are part of the cart line's price, so percentage coupons apply to them too. A product on sale adds the options to its sale price.

## Other price types

Percentages of the product's price, prices per character or per unit, and prices charged once per cart line whatever the quantity are part of Optionline Pro. See **Price types**.
