# Filtering and uploads - Folderline 1.x documentation

> How opening a folder filters the library, how it works with WordPress's own filters and search, and where new uploads go.

## Opening a folder

Click a folder to see only its files. This works with everything else the Media Library has: the type filter (images, video, documents…), the date filter and the search box all apply within the open folder. Click **All files** to search the whole library again.

In the list view, opening a folder reloads the list; you can bookmark the page or share its address and the same folder opens.

Tick **Include subfolders** at the bottom of the panel to include the files of the open folder's subfolders.

## Uploading into a folder

Files you upload go into the folder that's open:

- **Media → Library**: open a folder, then click **Add Media File** or drag files onto the page.
- **Media pickers** (Add Media, featured image, the block editor's image and gallery pickers): choose a folder in the folder filter, then upload on the **Upload files** tab.
- **Media → Add New**: choose a folder in **Upload to folder** under the uploader. It starts at the folder you last had open.

With **Unsorted** open, uploads stay out of every folder.

## The default folder

Uploads that don't come from inside a folder go into the **default folder**, if you choose one under **Media → Folder Settings**: uploads with "All files" open, images dropped straight into the block editor, and files added by other plugins. Leave it at **Unsorted (no folder)** to keep those out of folders.
