# Requirements - Fileline 1.x documentation

> What Fileline needs to run, and which servers, themes and editors it works with.

- **WordPress 6.5** or later.
- **PHP 7.4** or later (PHP 8.1 or later recommended).
- **MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.3+**, as WordPress needs. Fileline keeps versions in a table of its own (`wp_fileline_versions`); the downloads themselves are posts.
- **No WooCommerce** or other plugin.

## Web servers

| Server | Protected folder | Faster sending of big files |
|---|---|---|
| Apache, LiteSpeed | Works out of the box (`.htaccess`) | X-Sendfile, if `mod_xsendfile` (Apache) is installed; LiteSpeed supports it natively |
| IIS | Works out of the box (`web.config`, with IIS's Request Filtering) | PHP sending |
| nginx | Add the rule shown under **Downloads → Settings** | X-Accel-Redirect, with the internal location shown there |
| Others | Use your server's own way to refuse requests to `wp-content/uploads/fileline` | PHP sending works everywhere |

See **Secure serving and server setup** for the details.

## Permalinks

Both work. With pretty permalinks, download links look like `/download/press-kit/`; with plain ones, `/?fileline=12`.

## Themes and editors

- **Block themes** (such as Twenty Twenty-Five): use the **Download button** and **Download list** blocks.
- **Classic themes** (such as Storefront or Astra) and page builders: use the `[fileline]` and `[fileline_list]` shortcodes.

Buttons take your theme's own button style. Downloads are edited with the classic editor, which keeps the Versions and Access boxes together on one screen.
