# Renaming, icons and order - Adminline 1.x documentation

> Give menu items your own names and icons, and put them in the order that suits the people using them.

## Renaming an item

1. Click **Edit** on the item's row.
2. Type the new name in **Menu title**. The box shows the original name until you type.
3. Save the menu.

The new name is what everyone sees in the menu, and in the admin bar's site menu for the Dashboard, Themes, Widgets and Menus links. Clear the box (or click **Restore this item**) to go back to the original name.

**Count bubbles stay.** If the item has a count bubble, such as pending comments, plugin updates or WooCommerce's processing orders, it stays on the renamed item and keeps counting.

Renaming changes the menu only. The screen's own heading, its address and who may open it stay as they were.

## Choosing an icon

Top-level items have an icon. To change it:

1. Click **Edit** on the item, then **Choose icon**.
2. Type in **Search icons** to narrow the list (try "cart", "chart" or "admin").
3. Click an icon.

The picker offers all of WordPress's Dashicons. Press **Esc** to close it without choosing. **Use the original icon** puts the item's own icon back.

Submenu items have no icon in WordPress's menu, so they have no icon setting. An item you move to the top level gets a plain icon, which you can change.

## Changing the order

Drag an item by its row to where you want it, or use the arrow buttons on its row:

| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Up arrow | Moves the item up among the items at its level |
| Down arrow | Moves it down |
| Right arrow (top-level items) | Moves it into the submenu of the item above it |
| Left arrow (submenu items) | Moves it out of its submenu, to the top level just below its menu |

A top-level item's submenu moves with it. Order changes apply to everyone: the menu has one order.

> [!NOTE]
> The first item of a submenu is where the top-level item leads when it's clicked. If you move a different item to the top of a submenu, the top-level item leads there instead, exactly as in WordPress.
